"Maths Meets Myths" (MMM or "Mythematics") is a research project that started with funding from the Leverhulme Trust in 2011. It has pioneered investigations into network structures in ancient and medieval epic narratives. The first paper is the most downloaded in the history of the European Physical Society’s flagship journal, featuring in “highlights of the year” and elsewhere. Publications, magazine articles and books followed, triggering global interest including in TV, radio, newspapers and online, reaching millions of people. Further funding came from the European Science Foundation and the EU's FP7 and H2020 programmes. The impact from the project arises from creative mergers of Maths Myths & Metrics (MMM). MMM impacted widely and deeply on society and culture, igniting interests which lay dormant to public awareness for centuries. E.g., it sparked protests against misappropriation of mythology in Ireland where recent selection of a colonial, neo-classical statue overwrites cultural authenticity. MMM triggered poetry, art, music, collaborative street performances, community events, a partition signed by hundreds of people and multiple and repeated media activities citing the research. This website documents some of that impact. |
